Summary: | In this era where people have begun to realize the importance of environmental friendly processes to protect the nature, adsorption process plays an important role to reduce dye pollution that come from textile industrialization. Adsorption is present in many natural physical, biological, and chemical systems and is widely used in industrial applications. Many researchers have made lots of investigation on producing low-cost biosorbent as an alternative method to replace the conventional adsorbent that always use which is activated carbon. The dye removal performance was strongly affected by parameters such as pH, adsorbent dosage, initial dye concentration, temperature and contact time. The optimum conditions for each parameter were conducted using One Factor At A Time (OFAT) method to determine the removal efficiency of methylene blue. The effective time of contact for better dye removal performance was found to be 150 minutes. Maximum removal of dye was achieved at the pH 8, adsorbent dosage of 0.4 g, initial dye concentration of 25 mg/L and at temperature 35 C which yielded methylene blue removal of 86.36%. The adsorption of methylene blue using mango peel was found to follow Langmuir isotherm and the second order kinetics was best fit. The FESEM of mango peel exhibits that it has a rough and porous surface structure then was changed significantly after adsorption of methylene blue. While FTIR analysis showed that there were hydroxyl and carboxyl groups on the surface of the adsorbent. The results from this research were indicated that mango peel has potential as adsorbent for the methylene blue removal from aqueous solution in batch process. |
